What to bring and what to wear in the studioIn the pottery studio, you’ll be making things from wet clay, washing clay from your hands and sometimes using liquid glazes. The chances of getting your clothes soiled are pretty high.
However, our studio provides the aprons, towels, gloves, masks and all the tools you will need for your classes.
So unless you have favourites of your own, please feel free to use ours.Think gardening clothesThe best clothes for a session in a pottery studio are the kind you might wear when gardening. Something comfortable, maybe well worn-in and easy to wash is ideal. Pants are recommended for your convenience and safety.

Many potters wear two or three layers, so as they warm up, they can remove the outer layers to stay comfortable.Be aware that you will be using machineryYour safety in the studio is essential. While your clothes should be comfortable, make sure that the sleeves and hems don’t hang so loose that they may catch while working.

Long hair can be very annoying if it flops in front of your eyes while looking down as you work the clay on the pottery wheel. Tie your hair back, wear a headband or even a hat, and that way you can avoid brushing back your hair while your hands are coated with clay.

Closed-toed shoes are essential. Most potters have a pair of comfortable old shoes that they wear in the studio to keep their feet warm and protect themselves against dropped pottery tools or stubbing their toes.

Potters have found that jewellery like bracelets, bangles, large rings and loose hanging necklaces may interfere with their work and could get caught up, so we recommend you remove jewellery while working in the studio.Pottery hands and fingernailsWhile it is possible to work clay and have long fingernails, it is a challenge. Potters use their hands, their fingers and particularly their finger-tips when shaping pots on the pottery wheel. Long nails can make that difficult.

When working with glazes, disposable gloves can be a good idea to keep your hands free from the glaze chemicals. Gloves when throwing clay are problematic though.

So you will get clay on your hands and have to wash it off several times in each studio session.
If your skin is sensitive, you may like to have some hand-cream at the ready for the end of a session.Washing and wastewaterWashing clay from your hands and tools is an essential but repetitive part of studio life.

We cannot put clean-up water into the local sewage system as the clay particles will settle and eventually block the drain pipes. We use a three-tank settling sink to collect the clay particles and then discharge the remaining water onto our garden.

Please use the two pre-wash buckets to clean your hands and tools before using this settling sink.Covid SafetyWe are a Covid safe studio. We ask that you check into the studio using the government-approved mobile applications like the “Service NSW” app.

The studio is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before each session as required for Covid safety.

We ask that you do not come into the studio if you have flu-like symptoms – even the slightest ones. We also provide masks, approved hand-wash and disposable towels for your safety.

We ask everyone to follow the current government regulations regarding social distancing, numbers of people in spaces and mask-wearing.

Enrol for a six-week term of pottery classes where award-winning ceramic artist Frances Smith will guide you through the fun and creativity of making pottery.

In small classes of just four people, Fran will give you individual attention to help you create functional pots or pieces of ceramic art.

Who is this class for?

Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, Fran will guide you through the next steps to make creative and practical works from clay.

Over the six-week course, Frances will take newcomers through the pottery process from forming a shape from wet clay, drying it and then turning the leather-hard clay ready for the first bisque kiln firing.

Then she’ll show you how to decorate your piece with colourful glazes, and finally, Fran will load the kiln and fire your works.

What do you need to bring?

We will supply you all the pottery tools you will need, as well as an apron and a work towel. Just bring yourself and your ticket (which we will send to you when you have enrolled).
You will have up to 10 kilograms of clay which is fired in our kilns each term. We also supply our standard glazes for your use during the class. Additional clay, glazes and kiln use can be purchased if needed.

PLEASE NOTE
We have six terms of six classes per year. If you miss a class, we have provided a seventh week to each term where you can make up the missed day. Missed days in one term cannot be rolled over into another term.

Studio Safety Rules – Managing Dust
Dust in the pottery studio contains particles of silica which are a health hazard. There are some simple rules to minimise your exposure.

RULE 1: “IF IT’S WHITE IT NEEDS A WIPE”
RULE 2: NEVER blow the dust
  • Minimise dust by constantly wiping down work surfaces with a wet sponge or mop on the floor
  • Always soak aprons in a bucket of water or wipe down with a sponge
  • Prolonged exposure to silica dust can cause a serious lung disease called Silicosis – be aware for your own and other’s health
  • Exercise caution always, be vigilant, use a wet sponge and/or spray bottles and always wash hands before consuming food or drink.

Tips to minimise dust

  • Avoid sanding, carving, scraping or scraffito of dry pieces. If you must do it, then:
    • Wear a proper dust mask with a minimum of a P2 rating
    • Work outside over moist newspaper or a shallow bowl of water so all fine dust drops straight into the water
  • NEVER BLOW DUST when carving, incising, turning, glazing or sanding. Use a brush instead
  • NEVER scrape dry clay from ware boards or bats. Wash it off instead
  • ALWAYS use a wet sponge to sponge work surfaces after wedging clay and as soon as white dust starts to appear on any surface
  • Replace plastic sheets that cover the shelf or your work regularly as they gather dust over time
  • Take clay out of the bag and place in a plastic container, in order to eliminate clay dust from the bag
  • NO floor-sweeping! Use a wet mop only and change the water in the bucket often
  • Have “studio shoes” that you only wear in the studio so no dust goes home with you
  • Wear a “lab coat” or have a set of “studio clothes” that you change into
  • Wash aprons in a bucket of water before putting into the normal wash.
Remember – “If it’s white it needs a wipe”
